Busy Busy Day
Just finished viewing the Ancestry Webinar, "Finding Irish Ancestors in American . . . & Ireland". It was very good, BUT, not much help in finding information for our James McManigle, born in 1782! The Webinar was not very encouraging for locating information pre 1800, actually pre 1850! Can alway hope to find perhaps a newspaper article somewhere along the line.

I read alot of Blogs today, Dick Eastman's Blog announced a new 'Genealogy' search engine! Mocavo Genealogy Search. There were many comments in many of the Blogs today, some were not too nice! Some were though!
Why was I so busy today . . . I became lost in the Macavo Search for McManigle (on the first page of results!). Found old message boards, many I had forgotten about. Even one for the Morrow/Satterlee families that I had totally forgotten. I went into Legacy to see what I had on them . . . oh oh nothing! Took me a few minutes, but I figured out that perhaps it was saved in the backup of the McManigle Family website, last backup of 2006. (I was smart enough to saved a copy of all the pages, and I even remembered where I saved them to). Sure enough the information was there, but almost all of it had no sources. That information must have been found before I started keeping better sources. I did find a source for the Satterlee family that pointed to William James Satterlee's website, Satterlee.org . Yep pretty sure that is where I got that informtion, and he had added so many pictures and his memories of his grandparents, James Morrow Satterlee and Nettie Alvira McManigle. Wonderful stories and pictures, I spent hours copying and pasting! Note: I will not be posting those stories on the McManigle Family Website, William spent a long time on his website and so I have redirected interested people to his website, www.Satterlee.org . But I have add his information to my Legacy program and marked them private so that they do not post when I upload the pages.
Well, I guess I will head on back to Mocavo and look at more the of search results before I give my opinion of the new Macavo Genealogy Search engine! Give it try, can't hurt.

McManigle Website Update con't
I have not forgotten what I was trying to accomplish, I have been working on updating the McManigle Website . This morning I received the new password to access the website. I opened FTP Commander Deluxe (free software). Entered the new password and YAY it worked! I was able to download the graphics I needed for creating the updated website ~happy dance~
While I waited for the new password from RootsWeb, I continued to transcribe for Ancestry and spent a lot of time making sure that the pictures from Legacy were attached to the right person. I really love Windows 7, but the biggest problem I have encountered is that the attachments, weren't attached. But it looks like once I attach one picture to a person, all the pictures for that person, are redirected to the correct location.
Today I am continuing with the pictures and also updating some of the family. Making sure that the emails I have received with family information has been added to the Legacy program. Of course, I become easily distracted by the records and will wander off for more records ~laughs~ But then, that is one of the fun parts of Family Research.
I received an email from Dennis Janke which helped a great deal with the Hershlep/Hershleb Family. Then this morning I received an email from Tracey Taylor, a new found cousin from James McManigle family to Sarah Bowley who married James Corey McManigle, son of Alexander and Juliet (Graham) McManigle. Always wonderful to hear from new and old cousins!
Another chore I have is to find a HTML editor, I used FrontPage in the past, but no longer have access to that program. I have been looking for the past couple of days and will have to try out a couple before I make a decision. So this process is moving along, just slowly, but hopefully, it will become easier to keep the website updated in the future.

James Wells Update
I received an email from cousin, Bonita Hilmer. Many of you may be familiar with her, she has done a lot of research on the McManigle/Wells lines. She was able to purchase a family bible of Burt Wells. The following is needed for corrections to previously posted information. Would love to get a copy of the page(s) from this bible ~smiles~ Very lucky find Bonita!
"Here is the transcription of Burt S Wells bible:

Interesting, as I thought 'Our James Wells', was James Fones Wells, and this bible is showing a separate son, Fones. Also a new daughter, Martha T. Wells and another new son, Charles K. Wells. Need to find out if the Military information on James was correct . . . I see an email going out again to Bonita ~laughs~
Please add this new information to your database and please do not forget to source Bonita Hilmer, thanks.

James McManigle
James McManigle is one of my 'Brick Walls'. You can see below the many different spellings of the Surname. Copies of the original Census records were found at Ancestry. I have a transcribed copy of the Children's Baptismal page from Paul M. Ruff that Pauline Fink shared with me.
The 1850 US Federal Census for Eldred Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania shows:
lines 25-30
25 McMANIGIL, James 68 years male farmer born in Ireland
26 Susan 57 years female born in Pennsylvania
27 James 28 years male farmer born in Pennsylvania
28 Solomon 20 years male farmer born in Pennsylvania
29 Betsy 18 years female born in Pennsylvania
30 Esther 32 years female born in Pennsylvania
note: Ancestry was given correction for the Surname
From this we can see James was 68 years old in 1850, so this date of birth is about 1782 and he was born in Ireland. I have no other documentation for birth.
In 1810 Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania he is listed as McMangee, James, living alone between age of 26-45.
note: Ancestry was given correction for the Surname
In 1820 Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania he is listed at James M. McDaniel with his family
McDaniel, James M.

1 free white female under 10 years (Esther)
1 free white female of 10 under 16 (Rebecca)
1 free white female of 16 under 26 (Susanna)

In 1830 Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania he is listed as James McManigle (YAY name spelled correctly)
McMANIGLE, James
1 Male under 5 years (Alexander)
3 males of 5 and under 10 (William, Robert, James)
2 males of 10 and under 15 (John, William)
1 male of 40 and under 50 (James)
2 females under 5 years (Christine, Susanna)
1 female of 15 and under 20 (Esther)
1 female of 30 and under 40 (Susanna)
In 1840 Eldred Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania he is listed at McGanigal, James
McGANIGAL, James
1 male 10 and under 15 (Solomon)
2 males 15 under 20 (Alexander, James)
2 males 20 under 30 (Robert, William)
1 male 60 and under 70 (James)

2 female 10 and under 15 (Christine, Susanna)
1 female 20 and under 30 (Esther)

Thanks to Pauline Fink, I have a copy of the Baptismal Records of the children of James (Jacob) McMannigle and Susanna nee Baker from German-Church Records of Western Pennsylvania, Vol. IV, Greensburg and Greensburg Luth to 1890.

2180 Jacobus 22 Nov 1820 / 12 Apr 1821; Parents: Jacobus MacKamiel & Susanna
2648 Susanna 19 Jan 1828 / 27 Mar 1828; Parents: Jacobus MecKmännical & Susann; Sponsers: Jacob Bäcker & Christine

2849 Elisabeth 5 May 1832 / 4 Sep 1832; Parents: James McMenecle & Susanna (the mother)"
I have heard that there are tax records in both Westmoreland and Jefferson Counties, but I have not seen a copy of them, yet. Also on Ancestry Family Trees, a couple of the trees have stated that he was born in County Down, Ireland. I can't find out where this information came from.
I would love to find out where he was from in Ireland, who were his parents, siblings other family members, when did he come over from Ireland. So many question, but isn't that what we love about family history ~laughs~ I would also like to find out if all the McManigles are related.
